An afternoon in a private hospital

Care in an ordinary encounter

I accompanied a friend to an eye appointment at Hoàn Mỹ Gold Kỳ Đồng in Ho Chi Minh City. Hospitals were not among the places I had expected to write about, but an ordinary visit opened another window onto daily life.

The ground floor felt spacious and modern. Upstairs, the rooms looked older and plainer, but clean. Registration and the eye examination moved quickly, and the staff were kind. When my friend explained the timing needed for orthokeratology lenses, they agreed to help speed things up.

I cannot use one afternoon in one private hospital to judge medical care across Vietnam. What stayed with me was more specific: the contrast between different parts of the building, the order of the visit, and the way staff responded to a practical concern.

A hospital is more than its equipment or its appearance. It is also a space where people follow routines, wait for answers, and decide whether they feel they can trust the people caring for them. This visit gave me a small, situated experience of that process.

越南生活观察，一家越南私立医院

这次分享的不是美食，而是一次陪诊经历。

朋友最近想检查一下眼睛，我们一起去了胡志明的一家私立医院。

这是我第一次走进越南的医院，也因此格外留意这里的医疗空间和就诊流程。医院一楼大厅比我想象中宽敞很多，整体设计偏现代，明亮整洁，给人的第一印象更像一座商务办公楼，而不是传统医院。那里并没有开温度太低的空调，这是偶尔的感受一点微风在吹。

眼科设在二楼。相比一楼，二楼的装修就更朴素一些。整体干净、有秩序，但装修风格让我想到国内一些建成时间稍早的医院，没有特别新的设计，不过维护得不错。

朋友挂号、检查视力，再到医生接诊，整个流程比我预想中快很多。在等待过程中，我也一直观察着医生、护士和患者之间的互动。

至少从这次陪诊的经历来看，医护人员的态度都很友善，也会耐心解释检查内容，让人觉得比较放松。以及我和朋友急着出门旅游，要他们加急制作OK角膜塑形镜，也二话不说的同意了。当然，这只是一次陪诊观察，并不能代表越南私立医院的整体医疗水平，也不能据此评价医疗质量。

但作为一个学习人类学的人，我发现，医院也是观察一座城市很有意思的地方。一座医院不仅提供医疗服务，也反映着一个社会如何组织医疗空间、如何安排就诊流程，以及医护人员与患者之间如何建立信任。

很多时候，我们通过餐桌认识一座城市；而医院，则让我们看到它面对疾病与照护时的另一面。
